I found there was a load of gibberish talked on that forum. Nowhere near the level of expertise and trustworthy info found on LZ. It was nice to see more pics and what people got up to with their Freelanders, but I gave up on it!

It just seems like so much is wrong with it,alot more than i had first thought, i was hoping when i bought the vehicle that a gearbox would sort all but it seems a gearbox is just the start, where do i start i need to change something i have a mechanic lined up with a 2nd hand gearbox and clutch should i stick it in surely it will do more good than harm and the check the cvs, the cutting out of power will have to do for a while i thought it might be a clogged up egr valve at first

Do you have any service history? That would defenetly help.

Gearbox with clutch and hydrolics should sort the reverse gear issue. and possibly the vibration if not comming from drive shafts so that's one so that's possibly one solution.

For lack of power, I'd try the cheapest 1st options 1st. Oil Breather (Install upgraded PCV valve mod), Turbo Breather, check Turbo hoses, check Vacum Pipes. Then move on to the other options.

At least you may hopefully sort some issues while waiting for mechanic.

Thanks again lads il go ahead with the gearbox and clutch all because ive got a pretty good deal in that side of things

2nd hand gearbox - £250 with warranty
New Clutch and hydraulic kit £158 plus vat
Fitting - 2-300 pound
Which i thought was reasonable considering some prices people have been quoted
So should i leave the ird as is ?

Ask the mechanic to check the IRD as he still has to take it out to remove the gearbox. He can inspect the oil and gears inside. But again most probbably not gonna find anything wrong with it.

No service history, ok thanks again everyone ,

Im gonna change the gearbox and clutch just first and take it from there ,
Il come back to this to inform you of the outcome

Cheers

I may stand corrected here, but when I see "hydraulic kit" that is usually the term used for the hydraulics on the K Series and L Series 2.0 diesel clutches - its a 1 piece sealed master/slave/pipework unit. I may be wrong and that's also the term used for the TD4 (which has separate master and slaves components). If he's got the wrong box and clutch though you may have a wait once he's dismantled everything and waiting for the right parts that might cost more. Hope I'm wrong - but worth a double check.

Thanks GrumpyGel but its the hydraulic cylinder for the hydraulic clutch thats comes with it i am supplying the parts and that clutch kits was suited to my reg and for an 04 LR FL td4 2.0 which i have so i think it should be ok but i know the part supplier so if theres any problems he could get me another clutch for the following day !

My two pence worth here; You may have problems getting in reverse if your clutch is on its way out which it sounds like it is, Removing the rear prop (Think it was GrumpGel that said this) puts extra strain on the engine mounts so that could be why its banging the gear stick about if they are excessively worn. And it turns out to be this and you are replacing them and not ever going to put the prop back on then I would replace the bushes with a poly bush. Also I know what you mean by too many problems all at once as my car suffers the same. It was alright for the first year then bang! Windows stopped working, Switches, lights, bushes, suspension, Brakes, Trim, Speakers, welds, pulleys, belts, aircon, door locks, alarm, Engine service items etc. all started going wrong. I am still in clear up mode and only just got the car passed its MOT with no advisories but there is still loads more to do over the summer. The more that goes wrong and the more you do yourself. The more you will quickly become a Freelander Expert ;)
