Hi there

We have had this problem for some time. The local specialist hasn't been able to find the fault - first putting it down to worn engine mounts (now replaced) and then saying that the wear in the front right CV joint could be causing the rest of the 'wobble'. Thing is, after having the engine mounts replaced there is absolutely no difference and I've never heard of of a worn CV joint making a whole car shudder whilst driving at speed in a straight line. Has anyone else come across this?

What makes it worse is that the problem seems to be intermittent. The specialist removed the prop shaft to rule out the drive train from the IRD back and claimed it still vibrated but I never got chance to test it for myself. And if they did feel some sort of vibration, it could have been down to the CV joint, but they said it certainly wasn't 'shuddering'.

When it happens it is always under load, pressing the accelerator, normally in a higher gear I think (auto transmission) and above 70km/h. We have a small camper trailer/trailer tent and hooking that on the back made it much worse, bringing the shudder on at lower speeds.

We have double checked the tyres, had them rotated and balanced with no change.

Like I said, it's intermittent. Sometimes you can be cruising at a 100ks and have only a very slight vibration if any at all. Other times it shudders so much that trying to talk inside the car becomes very amusing (you have to laugh). Along with the vibration often comes some sort of noise but you only really get to hear that if you happen to be going past a brick wall with the window down going at the correct speed at a time when the problem is occurring - which is rarely! But when I have heard the noise it seriously sounds like metal just flailing around inside something.

Other things to note are that when coming to a stand-still and the auto changes down (probably to first??) it can sometimes clunk. Again, this isn't always so it's very hard to properly describe the symptoms.

I'm reluctant to spend 600 bucks for a new CV joint if the real problem is actually something else.

What are your thoughts?

Many thanks for your time.

hi

I would be inclined to get underneath and check all cv joints and the bearings that support the propshaft etc also check if the weights are still in place that balances the propshaft if it has fallen off you will see where it has beeen it must be something fairly worn or missing to have this effect:eek:

Hope you get it sorted

Hi Gordon

Thanks for getting back to me. Which weights are you on about? Is there somewhere online I could see an example picture so that I know what I'm looking for.

I did get some play out of the front right CV joint (going from the wheel) when I grabbed it and tried to 'wiggle' it. Enough to get some sound out of it moving it back and forth. It's probably only moving a mm though. Is this seriously enough to make the whole car shudder and wobble though? I would have thought that only the engine (being so heavy) would be the only thing that could cause such a vibration...

The balancing weights on the prop also sound like something that could cause such an effect.

Everything else seems tight when I try and rattle it.

It goes into the garage tomorrow so I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again
