I need to top up the engine oil and am not cetain as to what is currently in
there.
Is there any problem with mixing different oils, whether they be synthetic
or non synthetic?

No problem with top-ups but any refill should use oil that meets latest BMW
Longlife specification. It will be high detergent long drain oil with a
hefty pricetag.

Castrol SLX Longlife II Fully Synthetic, either 0W30 or 0W40, check your
handbook for correct grade. This stuff retails at around £12 a top-up tub,
try and find your local Castrol rep and contact him/her for a direct price.
I can get it at £9 per litre from my local rep.
Or go to your local Halfrauds and get Mobil1 Synthetic diesel oil in the
correct grade, but I'd monitor it and be cautious of how long to leave it in
there compared to the SLX.
I don't like Mobil1 personally, I've blown 2 engines on it - engines that
were running fine until it was put in!! Or was I just really unlucky in the
coincidences department?

Castrol is not the only manufacturer to offer suitable oil by any means.
Mobil1 with the 0w/40 viscosity grade is the only one in the Mobil range
that officially exceeds BMW specifications AFAIK.
Also I do believe that the Castrol oil for this engine is called "Longlife"
and *not* "Longlife11" which is a specialist product for Audi/VW PD diesel
engines and it says on the packs that it is not suitable for other engines.
Do check this before you buy though, just in case there is more than one
LonglifeII product available.

AIUI Mobil here in NZ have paid out for plenty of V8's that have given
up the ghost on Mobil1 (some years ago, and some very recently). I'd
never run it in anything - a certain race driver I know is sponsored by
Mobil, has Mobil1 oil drums in his workshop & pits, but it's someone
else's product in them.

Indeed there are many more that will no doubt be suitable, these are just
the 2 I have quoted off the top of my head. The SLX Longlife 2 (II) *0W30*
is the one that has the VW recommendation on it, the *0w40* is the grade
recommended by BMW for their engines, still Longlife II as far as I am
aware??
