Freelander TD4 diesel leak 90 degree hose to steel line under bonnet

Not sure if this is how one is supposed to make posts on here.

I have a 2004 TD4 manual. I have noticed a puddle of diesel under the passenger side front - determined that it is the 90 degree bend from a rubber line to a stainless hard line. It is at a junction of fuel lines under where EGR would be. The 90 degree bend seem to be sweating and the ends look all frayed etc. Perhaps it leaks more whilst driving but it is enough to fill all the little gusseted area on top of the gearbox and then it just flows down the front. I have to soak it all up from the little "pools" every 5 days.

My questions is - the other lines look to have the quick connectors on them but this one is just bare fuel line BUT it has the factory looking crimp clamps. Do you think this is factory and I can just replace with fuel line and spring clamps or was there a special "L" shaped speed connector on there?

I'd start by seeing if the hose is loose on the steel lines. If you can turn the hose individually of the steel line, then the hose has lost its elastomer softeners, shunk and gone hard. If this is the case, a proper fuel line work clip will help squeeze it on a bit tighter.
It's also possible that the hose has begun to crack internally, causing it to weep through the inner braid and out of the ends. In this case you'll also need to replace the hose, and use properly fuel line worm clips.

Hi,

That small fuel pipe that is leaking is not sold individually.

Now it's only leaking, but it can break anytime soon, so you have 2 solutions :

Buying the replacement part wish is WKW000081 or WKW000080, and unfortunately it comes with the fuel sensor and cost almost 150 bucks.
Or buying a fuel pipe of the good diameter, cut it at the right dimension and put 2 new hose clips.

Thanks for coming back to me - so just replacing this like for like with fuel line should be ok?

Measured the steel line - 8mm. Got 7mm and 8mm fuel line from Halfords and some of the spring clamps or constant tension clamps on amazon. I really don't rate the worm clamps but maybe I never used proper, good quality ones - I always strip them or have anxiety that the damn thing is backing out - if that is even possible.

Also do you think it is good practice to try and force the 7mm onto the 8mm line? I seem to recall that fuel line doesn't stretch as easily as a normal rubber hose so not sure if it will even fit. If it will fit on should I go 7mm to make it tight or stick to 8mm?

Another question. Is there a risk of damaging the high pressure pump if I pull the fuse out of the lift pump and start the car to lower the pressure in the system? Can I just let the car die or will that bugger the pump?

These are the clips I got - hope these would do? The advert proudly states that these can even be used on locomotives and ships

Sorry didn't see your reply. Yeah - I think a length of fuel line is the preffered option.

Personally I will not put this hose clips for a fuel pipe, put a hose clip like the previous one, or one with a screw on it.

Land Rover before BMW took over used Norma stainless steel worm clips. They are the Bentley of worm clips, and being stainless can be removed after a decade in the engine bay.
I replace all factory constant tension clips with Norma worm clips when I remove a particular hose for work.

Norma tested well on a Project Farm YouTube test.

The clips already on the hose can be used again as long as the fuel line is the same outer diameter, you open them with a small screw driver, and press them back together with pliers.

Thanks Arctic2 - pretty sure halfords sells the ones on the right.

I will get them on the way home.

Had a proper look today - looks pretty simple job.

One more thing. If I want to change to the Norma clips later are both the Halfords ones and the Normas "openable"? Can they be wound out, put on an existing, fitted hose, the end offered to the worm and tightened again? So I don't have to "open" the fuel system again?
