Coming home from a weekend away today pulling the van, the engine management light came on, looked at the temp. and that was fine.
I happened to look at my wing mirrors only to see black smoke coming out of the back of the car.
Looked quite alot against the cream caravan background.
We got off the motorway and took our time to the caravan compound.
Light had gone off, almost as quick as it had come on.
Continued our journey to the house, when the light came on again, so we pulled over and called the AA. They took us the rest of the way home.
We need to call the AA out tomorrow to see what the problem is, if they cannot solve the problem they will tow it to a garage.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, Allyson

That exact same thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago, the problem was a split in the rubber air intake pipe that feeds air into the turbo, replaced the rubber pipe at the cost of £20.
But, the chances of both of us having identical defects are quite small!

Hi Metocman

I posted the same message on the Caravan forum and someone also said the samething as you to night.
After I received your message I ran out to tell the AA man and hubby they had already found the split pipe, apparently the AA man had come across it before.
The diagnosis test showed nothing wrong.

Thank you all for your help, and well done AA.

No problem Ally, glad I could be of help.
The mechanic that fitted the new rubber air intake said that it was something that was common on a lot of Rover cars also, maybe Landrover should take note and source better parts if these things are splitting on regular occasions.
But then there parts/servicing sections wouldn't be making so much profit!

My husband went to buy it today it just over £6.00. They only had one in stock.
Guy behind the desk didn't realise that it was a common problem.
He's going to fit it tonight when he comes home.
I hope that it will be working fine then.

So did he, perhaps it was not the same pipe!

When I went and had a look it was a pipe on the front right hand side?

It was an elbow shape, it was on the right hand side going into the air circulation unit towards the turbo.
Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my TD4 2003 but short time later the other hose went there are 2 if your standing in front looking at the engine one is on the right top front the cheaper pipe and the other is front left and hard to fit the clip is low down. I got caught twice and no spare was avaibale for few days from dealers tried 4 fitted duck tape and worked did 400 miles before new pipe arrived.

Hi Paul

Thanks for that, we will keep an eye on it.

The AA man put insulation tape on ours until we bought our pipe, when we were driving and picking up speed it sounded like fire works going off, everyone was looking around to see where the fireworks were.
