Freelander tailgate not opening

Hi everyone. Just bought my first Freelander. Its a 2005 TD4 commercial. I bought it knowing the tailgate would not open. I have done a search of this forum and google into the possible cause. The window works fine. The handle micro switch works because it drops the window slightly but the tailgate wont open. I have removed the panel and checked that the plugs are ok. Various posts talk about hearing a relay operate under the cover fuel filler side. I cannot hear the relay operating. The panel covers the whole side and lips under the wooden floor panel. I was wondering if anyone could offer any suggestions before I strip the whole rear interior to check the relay.

does sound like no power getting to it but if the micro switch is working then there is power so sounds like a sticking lock

Thank you for that. As I mentioned I have opened the panel and can see the lock mechanism. I have to humbly admit that I am not sure how to release it to open the tailgate to get to the screws to remove the lock. Any advice most welcome
