Hi folks - my 03 TD4 was belching out buckets of black smoke under heavy booting and was running lumpy. Got a mafam and senser from roveron and fitted them. Cleaned PCV assembly and fitted new wool filter. Took off EGR cleaned gunk out ( loads of it ) refitted EGR. Performance is better, running is smoother ( can hear turbo at last ) but in 1st and second gear under good throttle freebie is still leaving clouds of junk behind it. Should I disable EGR and fit new PCV assembly - any ideas out there ??

Mondo - Did you find out what was causing this and if so what fixed it ?

ERM !

nope:eek:

but rons box med it worserer!

so we was assumin that seein how it went like a hooligan it could have bin chipped by a previous owner;)

not much use i know Oh an yes get he depresion limiter doofer filter thing PCV or worrever yer called it changed cleanin em dunt elp!

EGR may well be stuck open due to 'GUNK' preventing the valve from closing. Disconnecting the vacuum pipe would make no difference if this were the case. You might consider an EGR bypass via Roverron/ Diesel engine tuning websites.
D...

Cheers Dann - I was kinda headin that way - does the bypass have any long term effect and although it might fool local MOT bandits , I take it that it is really an illegal mod in terms of emissions - could that mean insurance issues ?

Hi

Might be a bit off topic but how do I get the EGR lose and do I need to take of the inlet manifold ass well and clean all of it?

And does anybody have the part number for the EGR?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I did go to roverron's webpage but I'm stil not to sure what to do.... :(

Check that the turbo's variable nozzle actuator and linkage is not stiff or jammed.

I've heard of the actuator having to be changed (though some dealers have been known to replace the turbo instead only to find it was still the same!!)

Finally, check for splits in the intercooler hoses and leaks in the seals at the intercooler connectons.

Ron

Hi Ron - How do I get access to the turbo charger, according to the workshop manuals I have to remove half the engine to even see it and what does the nozzle actuator look like and where do I find it? Once Ive got there could you explain what checks to do. Cheers

Hi, madalan you can just about get to the turbo and actuator from under the car from the offside. check out my post on page 8 I fink on the post "loss of power at 70mph" and check your vacuum pipes rule out the cheapies 1st eh ! Sheriff

Madalan, don't know what the hose is called, but if you look under the bonet on your LHS you'll see a large diameter hose going from the engine. if you look under this pipe it could've perished, that's what happened to me and all it took was a replacement hose and the problem was solved. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info-I will try to get some access to the turbo - are there any clear signs of what Im looking for . Checked my intercooler hoses - they are both intact and LHS one was replaced at last service coz it was wearing thru where it brushes against a screw head underneath hose - great bit of design that one !!! Intercooler hoses are very oily inside though - is this normal or is there an underlying problem?
