Freelander Rear Diff Needed

Hi every one,

I am looking now for a rear diff for my Freelander 1998, The one on my car has started to show signs of wear and it will need to be replaced very soon,

Can someone on the site HELP me in my quest as always money is a problem that's why I use this site and Long may it continue !!!

My location is Devon,

To be honest any help would be welcome, should I be looking at Secondhand, Recon ....HELP

are you sure its the diff? i don't think i've seen mention of the actual diff going tits up on here but lots of diff mounts and rear sub frame problems.
 
Rear Diff mounts recently replaced 4 weeks ago,

Sub frame repaired yesterday the fixing bolt on drivers rear end had cracked away from the body. this repair was completed within an hour and cost only £25 .

Whilst under the car we noticed a lot of OIL flicked around from the diff when taking hold of the drive shaft we had lots of excess movement.

As I have noticed rear end noise and all the other obvious problems address we think it may be the diff.

Do you ave any other thoughts??

not often but have yer checked the output ane input bearings. if they wear excessively then you'll get play and noise. also as you have had to replace bits that hold it on it may have bin subjected to forces that in normail use it wouldn't be. the outcome of this could be rapid wear of the bearings.

just make sure you do need a whole diff and not a £5 bearing
 
The play is only at the entrance to the Diff, are you telling me I can replace an oil seal and get a set of bearings that might sort this problem out??

int no eggspurt on gaylander diffs but in the case of most diffs , aye yer can. just so happens am doing two jag diffs this very moment and the three bearings and seals come in at a fraction of the cost of even a second hand diff
 
reet well in that case whip it out and get yer self down to the nearest bearing place and get one to match. you should just needthe number that will be etched on the bearing outer edge. much cheaper than going to a dealer fer one

Theres a landrover bulletin about the rear diffs pre 2000. I think its on the rave cd. Seems that if customers complained off noise from the rear diff, Landrover dealers were instructed to fit the new type uprated diff. Basically they said the bearings were too small and the new ones have bigger bearings. If your going to keep the car you might want to fit one off these, they do come up on Ebay now and then, and in breakers. Its a matter of comparing that to replacing the bearings in the old diff, and if you know what your doing. Hope this helps.

it might make more sense to get the bearing and fit it. see how long it lasts then work out if its gonna be cheaper to get replacment diff or just change bearings when needed.
if for instance the bearing lasts a year and costs yer a tenner its gotta be cheaper than renewing the diff. if its only lasts yer 3 weeks then go fer a diff.

if you do it yourself its only gonna cost a few quid to find out.
as its not one of the normal daily gaylander faults i suspect it may be because of the loose mountings and may well last fer ages
 
I should have said in my earlier post that i'm sure the bearings in the new uprated diff are the ones on the drive shaft outlets, which also support the crown wheel, you can see the difference in the casing size to accomodate them. I think the input bearing from the propshaft is the same. However the wear you describe in that bearing could be caused by any wear in the smaller old style drive shaft bearings, ie the crown wheel moving about. Course if you decide to replace the bearings yourself you wont know this until you have stripped it all down. If you know what you are doing mechanically and can afford the car off the road for a little longer, then go for it, strip it down and see what bearings you do need, it might only be the propshaft bearing thats worn. Personally I would persevere and try and get hold of the newer uprated one and do a quick change over.
 
ffs thicko, i know explaining yer bamy posts int yer strong point but fer the sake of the bloke with the duff diff can you explain how

the only movement he has is at the input, now as there is no movment at the outputs how can the output bearing cause input movment?

am noy holding me breath while i wait for an explanation neither
 
The links for the kits are in the thread. IRD rebuild kits, sorry no link due to phone. Baldbryn of Landrovernet.com rebuilt the IRD. He said it was hard to shift the bearings using 10ton puller, the rear diff might be just as awkward. Can someone post the tech bulletin for the diff and IRD from RAVE, thanks.
