freelander petrol fumes

I own a V reg Freelander 1.8. (83000 miles) Just recently after even the shortest journey, I have noticed petrol fumes inside the car which seem to come through the dash air vents, this goes away quite quickly. But also there is a very strong smell of petrol near the fuel cap which is a new concern. The fuel lines all seem secure. When the engine is hot its difficult to see much. Could it be the Charcoal filter and/or the fuel dump valve are the cause of this problem? Should the fuel cap form an air tight seal?

fuel smell from the vents i dunno, but from the fuel cap? is that a serious question? its like saying my toilet smells like a ****house

Is it petrol fumes through the vents or is it exhaust fumes? When the engine is cold and off, can you smell petrol fumes in the engine bay? What about if you turn the electrics on then off 5 times, allowing the fuel pump to charge the fuel circuit each time, but not starting the engine. Can you smell petrol then?

When undoing the petrol cap you should get a suck in sound as there's a rush of air into the tank due to low pressure in there. If not, then this suggests a leak on the tank. Does the tank leak when full?

The tank is vented, why would you get air sucking in? Perhaps thats why your fuel pump is straining Hippo.

I can't remember filling my cars or any of the works hire cars, when the filler has been removed and the tank hasn't sucked in air. I assumed they all did it, via a pressure valve + the canister thing. Could be wrong.

if i run down a full tank mine does it everytime

Ok mine is a TD4. Cant see why a diesel should be different. Had plenty petrol cars before and never noticed it.

Tanks aren't allowed to vent to atmosphere! Eu regs. Fumes should be caught in charcoal canister and purged thru the engine!

Correct but they shouldn't create a vacuum in the tank.
