Freelander Key Fob problem

Hi - I am getting conflicting advice from various sources. My Freelander 08 plate fob doesn't open or lock the doors but if inserted into the slot on the dashboard it starts the engine. I'm not sure if the battery has gone or it's another problem. Does the fob need a live battery to start the engine please? I have tried getting an auto electrician out but they all must be so busy as I'm not getting any replies. Thank you.
