Hi All.

Looking for advice on excessive front wheel inside tyre wear on my freelander (both wheels). The car has been checked by 2 garages who both could find nothing was wrong with the car. The last garage adjusted the tracking slightly but said that it was really not badly enough out to cause the horrendous tyre damage that was evident. New tyres on are on now and I am watching to see what happens.

Read somewhere that anti-roll bar bushes might be gone or bottom suspension swivels could be worn. Car has done only 59,000 miles.

Cheers,

I would have expected other symptoms if the cause was due to excessive wear in steering/suspension components e.g. knocking noises or unusual vibration felt through the steering wheel.

In addition to tracking errors i.e excessive toe-out, another cause of inside edge tyre wear is incorrect set-up of the steering camber angles i.e excessive negative camber causing the wheel to lean inwards at the top.

If the garages have full alignment equipment they will be able to compare the set up with manufacturers specifications.

Thanks Dann
There appears to greater road noise or a roar and corners have to be taken with care at a slower speed.
If its driven any faster then screeching can be heard and the car wants to leave the road.

Regards

Motors with a viscous 4x4 system such as the freelander, older mondeos, cavaliers, etc do in my experience tend to eat through tyres rather rapidly, even when the suspension and steering setups are perfect.

Screeching and "hopping" across the road on tight corners tend to lead me to think perhaps your VCU is buggered, that would really chew tyres up rapidly.

Although the greater road noise could just be from having different tyres the remainder of this statement is quite alarming.
Where have you had the vehicle checked at tyre depots or decent garages?
If you have noticed this kind of difference I'd say there has to be something way out of adjustment because when something wears it's a progressive deterioration that isn't as evident.

If the VC was siezed then the back tyres would suffer too. Assuming the IRD and Diff haven't gone bang. I gather the alignment check on a Hippo is quite an art, requiring it to be check front to back and back to front.

It does sound like the toe angle is wrong when the car is under drive. The alignment machine will not notice this if the error is due to knackered bushes or some other significant suspension issue.

Don't know if anyone has any ideas but I have the opposite problem - there is more wear on the outer edge of the front tyres. I am not sure I would call it excessive but definitely noticeable.

1st thing is to check for wear in steering joints etc and have wheel alignment checked.

is it possible that the tyre wear started and then you had the tracking done BUT once the tyres have started to wear they will continue to wear and no matter what you do it wont stop it
