help please having trouble starting my td4 when hot read some possible fixes but have noticed both my cooling fans do not come on temperture is normal will this effect starting where do i look for fan problem

wouldn't expect fans to come on when temperature is normal, I've only heard mine come on once in three years.

fans not being on shouldn't inhibit starting.

if ecu can't see a temperature from engine sender, it fails safe and switches the fans on to full power, trust me you'll know when it happens, it's like a 747 landing.

for hot start problems, check crank / cam position sensor, it's been covered a few times on here.

good luck

Cool! Is there any way to manually turn on the fans just to make it sound like a jet?

Hi

I am also having a problems with the fans on a petrol W reg (2000) 1.8 Freelander which has just had a new:

Head
Head gasket (uprated)
Water pump
Thermostat
Cambelt kit
Inlet manifold gasket
Temp sensors (both brown and blue)

Despite the garage bleeding the system twice to ensure there are no airlocks in the system the car is still getting hot. The fans are not kicking in and I have been told this is the problem. How the heck can I get them to work considering I have already replaced the temp sensors?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Debbie

Have you checked the fans actually work if you manually supply them with power? Have you checked the fuses? It's always best to start at the component that isn't working and work backwards, i.e. fans, fuse, wiring etc... It could be something simple.

during normal driving, wouldn't expect the fans to come on, as air flow through the radiator caused by the ram effect will keep it cool.

When stationary (like stuck in traffic), the is little or no air movement so the heat builds up and the fans then come on to force air through.

If the thermostat isn't opening, this could prevent the coolant reaching the sender unit to tell the ecu to turn the fans on.

as said above, start with the fan and work back. Not sure about the 1.8, but on the td4 the fans have their own ecu, might be worth checking the connections, check for voltage at the fan connectors and so on, fuses etc

good luck

hi thanks for help everything seems normal so will leave fans alone another problem now td4 keeps hunting when ticking over but not all the time any sugestions welcome thanks:rolleyes:

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I have been away working and this is the first chance I have had to get back on the site.

I have checked that the fans do actually work but they are not coming on when car is stationary and temp gauge on dashboard is starting to rise. There was a new thermostat fitted so would have thought it would be opening OK.

Am not sure how to check ECU but will give it a go.

Thanks

Debbie

hi.
having trouble starting my td4 2 litre diesel. after 2 to 3 turns tries to start then starts up. cloud of white smoke then runs a dream . when you turn key of it will start up .when left a few mins trouble starts again. this only started after having a service.
garage said egr valve was the fault. put a new bypass egr valve still the problem.
could it be down to the deisel fillter wrongly fitted. been told that deisel pump should stop after a few seconds but keeps going. the work was done by local gararge not LR
thanks chris

Duff Injector

First try a load of good injctor cleaner through it - such as Millers

If that don't improve things in a month...

.... check yer bank balance
