freelander diesel engine fault

i have a freelander diesel, 2.5 engine. the problem is when i am driving along the engine management light will come on and the car loses power and the engine makes a louder sort of tappety/knocking noise. then after a while the light will go out and the engine will run smooth and quiet. can anyone give me any ideas if someone has suffered the same problem please

Ah yes the world renowned freelander 2.5 turbo diesel nutter b*stard.

It has a small squirrel called derek that sometimes gets annoyed when his FTSE 100 shares take a tumble so he disconnects or chafes through your #1 injector sensor (haktually quite similar to the 2.0L l-series

), he then has a panic attack and attempts to smash up your hydraulic lifters and give you lots of diesel knock.
The bosch vp37 pump compensates for this by playing derek's favourite 80's power ballads, usually foreigner or whitesnake, to calm him down.
After relaxing for a moment and realising that Holly Willoughby will return to his television almost every morning, he relents and re-instates the mighty power of your oil burner.

lol, now now people. ok i was wrong it is a 2.0. had 2.5 on my mind for days as i am currently changing the engine in a transit for a friend. @ bigdenbailey, someone told me that it may be the no.1 injector but was unsure if his knowledge was really that good so needed a bit more reassurance before i started replacing parts. do you think the injector is the best place to start?

Hell yes.

Usually chafing of the lead is the problem, follow the lead from the injector to the main loom down by the fuel pump. Ensure the lead is still cleanly connected and not damaged in any way. Only rarely the fault is the injector itself.
If nothing found then the man pump connectors are worth a look at too, other than that I would be going down the route of checking the engine and diesel pump timing.

Dont worry about disturbing derek its jeremy kyle and bargain hunt time for him.
