Freelander - Cuts when going into 2nd gear

Hi I have a 1997 freelander es 1.8 just had full gasket replaced including all bolts, distributor, cam belt, timing belt/pully. But still I have a problem with starting and when gearing down into 2nd gear at junctions its cuts out and struggles to start again, also there is now a slight rattling noise in the engine that goes away when you press the clutch down but comes back when you release it, anyone have any ideas of what it could be? any ideas would be appreciated thanks.
