Please help me.My 2003 freelancer td4 just started smoking heavily and I cleaned the pcv or crankcase breather element and now its even worse and oil is dripping from the exhaust, lots of it.The engine starts with ease and idles nicely. What could be the problem. My worst fear is it could be the turbo.

If your unsure what your looking at take it to a garage, my advice though is do not drive it if there is oil in the turbo pipes, I would suspect a turbo and if it sniffs its own oil it will be a new engine needed, get someone round who knows what they are looking at to check it or get the garage to recover it...

like jongould said,it does sound like the turbo seal has given up it's fight for life.get it looked at asap.but do not start or drive it as the engine could start running on it's own oil, then it will go cabboom:eek:

Hi guys,I removed the turbo and yes its gone.the shaft holding the fans has a massive play to such an extent the compressor fan blades where rubbing against the housing. What are the measures I should take to avoid possible engine damage when I put the turbo back.

get a new/reconditioned one, some places do sell new cores if you know what your doing you can change it yourself.

If its gone to the point of rubbing, then one of 2 things WILL happen very soon.

1. it will start to run on its own oil, runaway and vandalise itself,

or

2. the turbo will disintigrate, sending nice bits of metal into the engine, vandalising itself..

either of these 2 will require quite a bit of engine work, or a new engine.

your choice.

Thanks buddy.however the engine was still running fine before taking out the turbo, and never drove it when it started smoking badly, hope it didn't damage the engine.so what do I need to change or clean before starting it up again coz am gonna fix and put back the tubo.

make sure the turbo is a very good one, dont recon it yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing, secondly change the oil/filter more often and use a top quality oil everytime.

the turbo on my 300tdi let go, didn't have a run away but it sent swarf into the engine which resulted in me to rebuilding my engine. Next couple of months I will be rebuilding turbos, all rebuilt units will have garret rebuild kits and fully balanced.

Replace the oil, filter, feed and return pipes. What was the mileage? If its premature failure then maybe look at oil pump and strainer although its rare these are needed. Get a decent recon unit, do not use a polish or similar company, we have had nothing but bad problems with them, use a UK based turbo rebuilders, last place I used was London turbos and they were very good. Clean all the air pipes out when refitting as well...

She has about 185 000km on the clock.could somebody explain to me what it is when they say the engine had a runaway or running on its own oil.in my scenario is the oil cooler safe.

when the turbo starts leaking oil in can get drawn into the engine, the engine then starts running on it's own engine oil.if that happens you cannot turn it of.the engine then either explodes or runs until it has used all the oil up.

Thanks Gemsdad, fortunately it never did that. Thanks guys for your advice,am getting to know her better now.
