freelander 2.0l diesel fuel prob?

Hi, wondered if anybody out there could help me. I was on the motorway last weekend, driving along no problem when the engine started to jump, like i was running out of fuel, i let my foot off of the accelerator and the problem stopped temporerily. I carried on driving at a reduced speed ok for about 20mins when the problem started again, once again i took my foot off of the accelorater and problem cleared, 10mins later problem started again more violently, enough to make me pull into the hard shoulder, after 5 mins rest pulled off again ok for another 5 mins then stopped again with the engine managment light coming on. At this point called the aa and got a tow home. When i drive it round town now it runs ok, but as soon as i go on the motorway and start travelling at speed problem starts again. I dare not us it on long journeys anymore. Can anybody help me please? Thank you.
 
if its a td4 read mings tale of woe, the problem went on for some time till it packed up ,this was a fuel pump in the tank, but I got a lot of good advice from the Tig and the Zip if i would have taken it to main dealer they would have spanked me, as i was new to Freelanders went through a quick learn curve,but glad i got the good advice first. . .
 
As Ming has already said, your problem seems identical to his, his fault only occured on a run and not in town. his was the fuel pump which proved to be faulty.

This sounds like the old oil contaminated rubber pipe from the air box to turbo problem! The pipe goes soft and with the increased demand of motorway driving the pipe collapses and chokes the air supply to the engine and it dies back. When you take your foot off the pipe springs back out and all is well until you put your food down and it collapse’s again!

It had me going when mine went, I fitted wire coat hangers cut to length inside the rubber convolutions to stop it collapsing and all was well for a year until the pipe fell to bits at the turbo end and I had to get a new one at £100!!

It’s the subject of a service action bulletin AD354 and you might get it changed for free or should do as they cocked up the type of rubber to use when making the pipes! Its on one of the RAVE CDs somewhere
