Hope some one can give me some advice need prop shaft support bearings changing on the Freelander , so far had very different estimates £150- £300 . Always done my own maintenance but at 68 a bit to much to do on Drive now . Has anyone had them done and what price thanks in advance for info

Coincidentally just been on Bell Engineering website as recommended by others on this forum looking for VCU and support bearings, £60/pair - seems reasonable but you would need to add labour for fitting. I would say the whole prop needs to come off in order to separate the bearings from the VCU, took me (non expert) 1 hour to just remove the prop on the drive if thats any guide so garage could probably do whole job in 2-3 hours

Bell seem very professional in what they do. Deffo worth an email. And consider changing the vcu at the same time. They do fitting there and aren't a million miles from you if your location is correct.

Agree, test VCU following the guide given at top of this forum. False economy to change bearings then have to change VCU in a few months!!

Bell will fit a new VCU and bearings with old in exchange very reasonably. Probs about the 300 to 350 figure and you get a new VCU!!!

Yeh, good posts above. The first time you remove the props it can take a long time - someone like Bell will have them off in 10 minutes - hopefully that gets reflected in their labour charge so makes using them all the better and will cover some of the cost of the VCU if it needs replacing (and as said, its a good opportunity to change it if its getting towards the end of its life).

Interestingly, although they do a 'drive in replacement service' - they don't say how much they charge for F1 parts on their website. They do for all their F2 parts - and its generally £180. So if you're just getting bearings, that would make it £240, and for VCU & bearings £462.

With bearing cost should be about £100 i think that is what Bell charge, but as you say getting older make these sort of jobs harder, even though they are not difficult, there was a thread on here recently about GKN bearings being sold quite cheap.
