Found it.

At last I found the cause of the knocking, scrapping noise from under the floor pan. It only happened in 1st and 2nd but then as I went over rough ground. I thought it was suspension related but had no way of checking in the garage. That was until my big mate and his son came round. I got the both to stand on the rock sliders and rock the truck from side to side violently. Turned out to be a missing bolt holding the seat box to the chassis bracket right beside the hand brake. The two metal faces were rubbing together .peace at last.

It's the little things in life that give the most pleasure. Like all noises un a defender, you think it goug to break down at any moment.
