found a hole in the chassis !!!!

just found some rot in my 90 chassis its a 1991 and the holes have appeared on the rear off side , one hole at side of shock mount and one between upper spring plate , can i just weld a plate in ? anyone else has same problem ?

aye me i had a wee hole untill the welder started hitting fck out of it with a hammer
now i have big patches on mine

oh yes, ive ot two weld plates on drivers rear near the shock mount, found another small hole yesterday thats starting, waxoled it for now but a plate will be going there too!!!

patchwork quilt comes to mind on landy chassis over 2 days old....

Feel sorry for you guys, here in South Africa, Guateng (used to be Transvaal) at 6000 feet above sea level we get no rust, not a spot of rust on my 1997 90, chassis looks like new, suppose all the oil leaks help :

Had the same problem on my 92 110. The inner C-section was perfect, but the outer was very bad. Plated it up by welding to the good section. A bit fiddly but worked great. Made paper templates and then cut/ground new plate to fit.

we get hammered where i live.I can sea the see in most directions and its warm and damp 365 days a year.
kills cars.Me mother took a 5 month old motor back with a rusty roof and door bottoms.It only had 3k on it and the garage sent it back to the factory and gave her a newone.It happened again so she now has a defender which she hates but the ****ers lagged and it dont leak this week so she puts up.

the guys at the coast have similar problems, us guys in land are very wary of one's from either Capetown or Durban. there again UV f*%k's all the rubber seals around windows etc,wipers don't even last a season,but a bit cheaper to replace than chassis.

In this part of the world they put that much salt on the roads over winter that brakes pipes last about 5 years . Not holding out much hope for me td5.

Resurrecting this thread somewhat, Ive found a nice hole about 2" by 2" in the chassis just to the front of the N/S Rear shock. Its also cracking around and underneath running next to the plate that was welded in last year. Wondering if its worth hanging onto the car now as its got the juddering engine as well

Well sadly the Discovery is being traded in tomorrow, been told the chassis is so bad its best to be scrapped unbelievable, its only 10yrs old, seems such a goddamn waste. Cant find anywhere that does discovery galvanised chassis' either
