Guys - you often see Defender's for sale in various Landy Mags entitled 'For Export Only'.

Why are they for export only? Are they significantly different to vehicles in the UK and is there any chance they could be registered in the UK?

I have it in the back of my mind that they may be 'new' 300tdi vehicles which no longer meet EU emissions and therefore cannot be registered as a new vehicle in europe. I'm sure I've seen some new TDCI's for export only though??? Confused.

Only guesses but could be

Bought from LR on condition not sold in competition with franchised dealers?

No car tax / VAT payable if exported outside EU?

As you said; don't meet current EU emission requirements?

Land Rover don't want ROW spec vehicles to be sold in UK?

Tazz

My understanding of export only would be that it is of 25 years of age and is 90% standard to the year it rolled out the factory. Bringing over a defender to the U.S. is a bit of a pain but def well worth it once it got here! We declared it as a classic car and therefore didn't have to meet a lot of the new specs for stuff, but to do that it has to be 25 years old and 90% original. Now it really all depends on the guy inspecting it at customs, those guys are in their own world and can do what ever they want!

I too have been wondering this as one of said adverts is advertising delivery mileage RHD TD4 Freelander 2 for £18,000. This would contradict the thoughts about being over 25 years old...

Was going to telephone company concerned as the wife quite fancies one, but haven't got round to it yet. Will post answer if I get a sensible one...

There were a lot of brand-new old stock 'for export only' 300TDi's for sale a year or two ago, as already stated these did not meet current emission regs to allow them to be registered in this country.
The 300TDi was manufactured right up until just 2-3 years ago and the complete engine was available as a brand-new part from your main dealer (I know, I bought one). These could quite legally be fitted into earlier vehicles on their own or as part of a re-power kit.
