Evening forum,
I'm looking to fit a pair of side steps to my 300tdi 90. I want to try and keep to the original county spec and would rather not go with the 'running boards'. I've not bought them yet but looking at the fitting instructions they don't seem to show the drivers side fuel tank, therefore does anyone know if this needs to be removed before fitting? I'd really rather not remove it because I've just replaced it!
Thanks all,

No you don't. There's a support bar goes from the step to the chassis rail, under the tank.

Lovely jubbly.
Thanks Al203
I've been looking for a picture, but can't find one that shows it clearly.

This is the best I can do, but you can see the step attached and the tank still in situ.

What have you got now, nothing?

Thanks for the picture. Yes, nothing there at all. Looks like the step is located quite forward of the tank. I was wondering if the bracket runs underneath, how i would drill the hole for the rivnut without tank removal? Perhaps the bracket passes to the front of the tank?

Do you have a new chassis?
As for the exact location, it does look to the front of the tank. IIRC mine had a bolt right through the chassis rail, can't be 100% sure though as I'm going back quite a few years to the rebuild and now I have long side steps.

Original chassis still on and pretty good condition. Of course I have not been so proactive as to look for the original locating position until you mentioned the new chassis - doh....
I'll have a look now, then order them and keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for your help,
Cheers

Ha, ha, suppose you wouldn't know to look if you've not had steps on before.
