Word of warning, the RF Receiver doesn't have any part number stamped on it anywhere.....so be very careful! Ask for a copy of the receipt of when and where they bought it.

If no receipt, DO NOT BUY IT! It's far better advice to go and buy it from an Independent LR garage or even dare I say from Land Rover themselves!

how are you supposed to check which version you have?-

incidently, I don't have he RF problems as some of you have mentioned ( I do have CCTV and WIFI ) but would like to know which revision of the RF receiver I have.

THE best thing to do is disconect the rf reciever for your RR then see what happens!....if the problem stops, thats it!....the rf reciever is located in the rear load space on the right behind the panel at the side. Undo the popers, then one screw next to the rear of the seat. The rf reciever is the plastic box, just unplug it. Rember that the remote will only work if you fire it at the right rear window up close because you have dissconected the ariel!....I tryed it, it worked, so i've just left mine dissconected ,but the mod is about £150 if you want to get full service back. I'm happy to walk a bit nearer the vehicle. Other people may think this is a bad idear but it works.

I asked the same thing, but LR informs me it's not possible. I can confirm this as I was given my old RF receiver back when I upgraded mine to YWY500170.

My RR was fitted with the original part AFR1953, and the transformation was instantly recognisable....the reliability came back and my battery was perfect once again.

I personally think disconnecting the aerial on a top luxury car because you don't want to spend £150 is simply false economy.

If your battery goes flat and you need to re sync your RR, it will cost you £200 odd quid to put right and that doesn't take into consideration of being flat trucked back to a garage. Do that a few times and your breakdown cover won't be valid and that cost £80 a go...maybe more.

Take it from me, I've been there! Best £150 I've spent on my RR....along with an upgraded alternator (80amp to 120amp).

you are right i but was quoted over £200 for the receiver from the dealer and i get a trade discount that is why i dint bother, plus the fact tere is 100s of pound that are always required for more serious problems, if oe receiver is prone to interferance it will only be a matter of tie before a new peice of technology interferes with the new receiver. The alternator is a must i agree along with a top class battery like i said no problem for nearly 2 years.

I don't work for LR, but what I did do is make an argument about the fact that LR fixed this 3 times now because it was defective. The first time LR even recognised the problem was in 2004, some two years after the last P38 Range Rover came off the production line. I argued that even if I had 2002 P38 its guarantee wouldn't pay for it and it's not a part LR considers to be on the recall list. I went to say that this means that each time I have this problem LR is quite happy taking £200 odd from me to re synchronise my RR and the keys with the security system, but not willing to actually fix the problem by replacing what is now considered and recognised by BMW/LR to be the main culprit of all flat battery and locks around the UK regarding the P38 and its damn stupid original RF receiver part AFR1953.

With that, my local official LR dealer fitted the part for free and only charged me for the part which I think was £140 or so.

Try it, you may get lucky as well!

Morning Adam (scratch this as the answer was just written above)

is there a VIN no from which you can identify if the last / latest RF reciever was fitted?

have a nice one

Good question, I'm not too sure actually. A good independent RR garage or an official dealer should know.

The problem is that any RF receiver on a P38 doesn't have any part number stamped on it, making it extremely difficult to find out what the current version fitted it.

Although, since we know that the first fix was in 2004, and your P38 hasn't got a receipt for that specific part. You can bet your bottom dollar you still have the original part AFR1953 as mentioned previously.

I was lucky as I have a full history full of receipts for my P38. I simply went through and checked and low and behold it had never been replaced....which didn't surprise me in the slightest as:-

1) My battery went flat and got locked out my RR lots of times and had to be flat trucked back home

2) The previous owner didn't have a clue what the problem was and thought it was the key fobs.....hence I now have 5 or 6 of them! A good sign that the receive is playing up and needs replacing.

Hiya Adam

probably its bite.the-bullet time and order one latest i have seen is 141Quid incl vat

Morning For what It worth

I have parked mine in underground car parks over the last few day & yep noticed the little transmission bulb doesnt glow.

Theres your answer either buy a update RF unit or dig yourself a bunker to put the vehicle in at night.

or when you go to a airport, park way under ground!

have a frequence-free one

Yup, sounds all too familiar! Before the update, I got stranded at Bluewater Shopping Centre, Bexleyheath Shopping Centre and a local car park....

...reason? all have wireless CCTV RF's....on each time had to be flat trucked back to base and lost my RAC cover for using it too many times! On each occasion the security system wouldn't disable the engine.

I can't stress how important replacing the RF receiver is....ok its £140 plus labour, but I'd rather spend £140 than be stranded in the middle of nowhere and have to be flat trucked back to a dealer and pay for it to be put on Test Book and resynchronise the damn keys each time for a hefty £200 odd pound.

Obviously at the end of the day its everyone's choice...but its a part I highly recommend replacing ASAP.

ive been reading through these posts and you guys are having real problems with your p38 r/f receivers , ive never had a problem with my 97my , dont know whether or not its been changed already , i can leave mine for 2/3 week between useing it and it still starts as if i just switched it off .
the remote works from a good distance away as well up to 50/60 feet or so so, maybe it has got the latest one fitted :D .

Personally, due to the fact the part doesn't have a part number stamped on it, you might wish to bite the bullet and buy it from either an Independent LR garage or an official dealer (spit spit!)....it sucks but you don't want to get version 2 when you paid for version 3....or worse get an AFR1953 back again thanks to old stock.
