Dear folks,
Can anyone think of a reason, or even a new area to start to look for a reason why I should have a flat battery every fortnight? It's a 1996, ex Transco, 300series 90. It won't hold a charge for more than a few days of not running -

Here's what it isn't: It isn't the battery, that's a new yellow top.

It isn't the altenator, that's just been done.

It isn't the connections loose on the terminals.

It isn't the plate under the seat touching the terminals, or anything else touching the terminals.

It's not running anything major -only the clock. And from what I came to expect of a yellow top, this is hardly up to those expectations.

I even have a big (tea tray size) solar panel trickle charger on the roof that plugs into the fag lighter. Seems to make no difference.

Any ideas where else to look or what to think of?

Many thanks in advance

Richard T.

Do you have a alarm? under bonnet light?

Blimey, that was quick... thanks Ian..
I'm sure the new altenator is ok as it now gets well charged while running.
I do have an alarm but I never use it, set it, ... never goes off accidentally.. could this be such a drain? (don't understand alarms, prefer Mr. Bean security.)

Otherwise runs nothing but (as I said) clock.

A big on / off switch !

Mine kept going flat.............not anymore !
I think mine was the rear window heater but i never found out.

You've probably got a short circuit somewhere, possibly to earth.

Fitting a battery master switch is a good idea, HGVs have them to prevent the batteries going flat. If you hide the switch it will also increase the security of your vehicle.

agree with all the above. Most likely a split in a wire somewhere, could take you months to trace. during this time your Optima will discharge/recharge/discharge over and over. Not good news for a battery. Spend a good weekend trying all the wiring where it is visible, then give up and fit a master switch :)

Thats what I would do anyway.

A master switch is a great idea. I thought of doing it before I tried everything else but every time I reconnected the alarm would go off (as it used to when I charged the old battery and had to dis and re connect it.) But hiding the switch ... now that's my kind of security. Fantastic idea.
Two birds; one stone, excellent.

Get a current clamp and just try sections of the wiring to eliminate them. If you have a multimeter already then you can buy one as an accessory to it.

You slip the current clamp over the wire to see if there is current running through it. They are less accurate at low current and with smaller wires.

I suspect a wiring fault probably caused by removing previous accessories that Transco had fitted, faulty radio, chaffing on the wiring, faulty relay or water in a switch somewhere.

Happy hunting.
