flashing odometer

what would cause a 1999 td5 disco manual to have the odometer flashing constantly a few seconds after start up ? also when i pressed the trip counter reset the mileage jumped to and additional 100,000 . i had to disconect the battery and it went back down .....strange.....Ideas anyone?

Usually this happens when the ECU detects a discrepancy between the cars ECU miles and the dash miles.

This could do with clarification by someone else!

pressing and holding the reset button will change from miles to KM and as said the flasing is caused buy a difference betwean the ecu milage and the speedo milige can be caused but running with a flat battery of changing the speedo or bcu (ecu)will need pluging in to fix

just learned something i never knew the reset button also does miles to km thanks for the reply .
