Firstly many thanks to all who provided excellent guidance to those wishing to restore the clarity of their clock/display units.

I have successfully carried out the suggested restoration. I have also replaced the black rubber strip which is designed to hold the ribbon cable connectors tightly to their associated circuit boards with an appropriate length of what I believe is called 'Earth Tail' this is a green/yellow plastic tube used by Electricians and slid over cables to identify them as earths on mains electricity installations. The material is pliable enough to be flattened and slid into the plastic retaining lugs yet has sufficient rigidity to maintain pressure where it contacts the ribbon cable connectors. Heating the material to simulate the effect of the sun on the display showed that it did not tend to lose its profile.

D....

P.S. Apologies to the old hands for whom this information would of course be superfluous.
