Flaking Lacquer

Anybody out there got any idea's as to how I can stop the lacquer on my 1989 classic flaking off and is it possible to re lacquer the bear paint and blend it in or has the whole panel got to be done???????????

you need to flat the edges back , this involves getting some 600 grade wetting sand paper . Flat back all the loose edges of the laquer until you cant peel it any more , the edges need to be feahered in to the underlying base colour coat , filler primer the damaged area , flat with the 600 paper the whole panel then will need to be re base coated and re laquered , this is if you want a mark free finish to the panel .

No consolation I know but in my experience this defect is very unusual. RRC's may well turn to dust but their paintwork is second to none. I've owned 3 around the age of yours & even the most abused example (an '85) still had it's original lustre when, at 20years old, it went to the breakers after 16 (yes sixteen) owners & a star-ship mileage!

You need to sand all the laquer off as it will cause all sorts of headaches with the paint on top.
Needs a sealer primer coat before any base then laquer. This is a must as old paint is a pain for reacting with modern thinnes
