I have to replace the clutch on my td4 2002 fl1 is it easier to take the gear box out or take the engine and box out . I'm I best to replace the duel mass fly wheel with a solid one thanks

I did it box out. With hindsight, it might have been easier to take the engine/box out as a unit (they drop down) but I didn’t have a crane. You only have to disconnect a few more things than the gearbox to take the whole lot out, and then changing the clutch over should be easy. One thing I’m not sure about is where to disconnect the fuel lines. Also, you’ll need some sort of dolly to roll the lump out from under the car.

The hardest part was getting the box back in place. I followed this guide: http://pmmonline.co.uk/technical/clutch-replacement-land-rover-freelander-2-0-td4/

I left the DMF in, as it was in good nick. Many have opted for the solid, but if you go for the DMF again it’ll be stock, as designed, and will outlast the rest of the car most likely.

Get the car jacked up as high as you can, on four axle stands, and fairly level too. Mine was much higher at the front and it made the engine sag back against the bulkhead, causing difficulties.
