Hi,
I have just fitted one of these to my Defender TD5 and thought I'd share a bit of helpful advice to anyone fitting one.
Firstly, when you get the kit, open the bag with the fixings in and locate the 2 'Rivit Nuts' and the 2 long allen head bolts and throw them in the bin!
The wing on a Defender is just too thin for these to work and you'll have a real good chance of them spining when you get right to the tightening up last few turns.......... like I did
Go to your local hardware store and get a few good quality 6mm bolts, nuts and washes.
Also get yourself a tube of bathroom sealent...... you'll need it if your planing to use your snorkle and are not just putting it on for show.
In the kit you'll find a metal plate that screws with 5 small bolts to the base of the snorkle. Before you fit this get a good bead of sealent under it. Mine left gaps under the plate, a good mm in some places.
Remove the grill from the top of the wing. This will give you access to the back of the holes you need to drill in the wing to fix the base of the snorkle. It is a bit tight round the ariel mount to get to the 2nd hole but you can do it, unless your built like popeye. If so.... ask a friend.
If you were using the rivit nuts you would have to drill two 9mm holes, but now a 6.5 or 7mm will do.
The base of the snorkle is located by 2 clips on the metal plate mentioned earlier. Carefully with a hammer, tap these in a bit about 2mm, so they get a good grip.
Then more sealent on the top of the foam rubber seal that goes on top of the metal plate before you fit it.
One last thing...
The metal bracket that fix's the top of the snorkle to the windscreen frame.....
Don't push the edge of it right up to the windscreen rubber seal, leave about 2-3mm, otherwise the base of the snorkle pulls away from the wing and could allow water in.
Hope this of use to someone.
Cheers
Carlos
