Fitting flexi pipe to down pipe

Just wondering, I'm wanting to fit flexi pipe to my down pipe which is off a 2.5td (54mm) but wondering do I clamp the flexi pipe on the inside or the outside of the pipe, maybe a stupid question.

Outside will be best as making the pipe smaller is bad for flow.
I fitted an inline stainless flex to my 90 200tdi just after the transfer box to stop cracking.
I used a weld on version, again it slid over the existing pipe.
