The wiring is actually done through the rear demister, though that almost always fails. I ran cable from the brake light (hinge side) to the high level, ran the cable under the window seal.

Yes. As i mentioned above, the brake light works off the rear demister, they are total **** and breaks the circuit which leads to a failing light.
So best to wire it direct into the other brake lights
