Now that I've gotten rid of my seized viscous fan, I'm fitting a 14" electric fan to pull air through my rad.

What is the best way to wire this up? I was going to go for a simple switch on the dash, (purely because it sounds easier to wire up), but I'm not sure if this would be good enough. I want to fit some kind of temperature sensor but I've no idea how this would be wired, or what it is even called  There's a Maplin nearby so I can pick up anything I need from there.

Cheers :D:D:D

I've still got the viscous unit in me 'fender at the mo, but reading through alot of these posts the general consensus seems to be that you don't really need a fan. On my list of jobs to do is remove the viscous unit altogether and see how she goes. Maybe if she starts to boil will I fit an electric, but with a cab mounted chrom toggle. That way I get cooling and a cool looking switch!!

Yeah, in the UK you don't need any fans at all with a Tdi, but I'll be off to hotter climates in my 110 over this year and next - so will need some decent cooling.

Hmm, I seem to remember there being a system where you simply poke a little probe thing into the fins of the radiator, rather than cutting into rad hoses etc. Can't seem to find it now though.

:D narr I was just under the impression I could just put a simple thermostat type device in the circuit to turn the fan on and off.

Does this one; VARIABLE THERMOSTAT RADIATOR FAN TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER on eBay (end time 04-Sep-10 16:54:10 BST) look like the type that ya have to put inside the hose or the type that measures the radiator temperature externally?

In the rad hose- see the ribbed bit of rubber with a slit in it next to the scotchlock? the sensor probe wire sits in this and is sandwiched between hose and rad tube.
Re the external sensor- if your rad fins got filled with mud would this not insulate the sensor and possibly cause over-heating?

I use a Kenlowe thermostat which has one of those probe things in the water pipe. No problem with leakage - but I seal it up for good measure. I would also recommend fitting a cut-off switch in the cab.

I would not trust the type where a probe gets pushed into the rad rather than in the pipes - that's a bit risky to me - what if you get a cold spot on the rad?
