Hi All,

I'm going to have a go at fitting a Disco high-range transfer box onto my '02 TD5 90. I do quite a few motorway miles and no towing, and this seems like a logical solution. It's costing about the same price as a tank of fuel so I figure if it gives me slightly better economy then it'll soon have paid for itself, with the additional benefit of better drivability.

From what I've read on t'interweb and people's advice, it should just be a straight swap. Or at least that's the theory! Is there anything in particular I should look out for, beware of, not do, or any special tools I might need etc... I don't fancy being up sh*t creek without a Land Rover!

Any help is most appreciated... I'll try and take a series of pics if eveything goes to plan and get them posted on here one I've done it.

I plan to do the same steve that will be of most interest. Btw where are you sourcing your disco transfer box from?? And did you manage to match it to the miles that were on yours.

It's from a guy I got talking to at the LRO show at Driffield at the weekend and was on about it and he said he had one kicking about. Apparently his mate needed a new gearbox a while ago and the transfer box came with it. I'm told it's done about 60k, and mine has done 34k, but it's not the end of the world. If it dies in a few thousand miles I'll still have the original which can go back in.

i've done a few for other people on 200/300s, but not on a TD5

i'll get round to doing it on my own 110 one of these days

What a coincidence I also want to do this - have a 3.5L Mazda engine in a 1990 90 but nothing else was changed meaning I could pull down a house even in 5th gear, always move off in second as 1st is just not needed.
Was advised that a transfer box from a Disco 200 would be ideal for me?
Any advice welcome and keen to hear how other people get on!! :D
Cheers
James

hello there

In not sure about a td5 but when i fitted a disco transfer box to my old 90 (c reg tdi converted) i needed to use the original hand brake bracket from my old transfer box but the transfer box casing was not drilled to accept this type of mount so i had to drill and tap the blanks not a big deal but this may be helpful. although im pretty sure a td5 has a better hand brake mount than the old type Jai
