Right my mechanic has asked me to ask the question regarding the correct firing order, upon putting my engine back in the car and connecting all the ht leads up as the book says it wont fire so what hes been doing is trial and error connecting so is it possible he might have the electic leads that power the coil packs crossed over and which cylinders go to which coil packs.

This is the last thing to do apparently apart from giving her a run

Cheers chaps

And I take it if the coilpack leads are reversed it will not fire in that order

The ignition works on a lost spark principal. One coil fires two plugs the one on compression and one that is exhausting. Coil pack 1 feeds cylinders 2,3,5,8. Coil pack 2 feeds cylinders 1,6,4,7.

Are u talking about the coil packs

Yes coil packs. Two coil packs side by side. Front row is across front of both packs rear across back of both packs.

....................................Front of Engine.......................................

Left......................1......6----------------5........8...................Right

...........................7......4----------------3........2...........................

From what I remember when I put the magnecor leads on a couple of years ago the packs was on there side but will go down tuesday morning and pass the info on cheers wammers and all who gave advise

Don't matter just picture them sat upright and follow the sequence.

It's hard to plug the coil driver connectors into the wrong side - they won't reach. Even if you fit the coil pack upside down the firing order will still be correct as long as the driving connectors are connected to the correct coils, ie right hand lead on righthand most coil pack and the leads are connected treating the physically upper most side of the coil packs as the top, as it's a wasted spark system you can use either of two "ports" for paired cylinders, ie swapping the leads over for cylinders 2&3, 4&7, 1&6 and 5&8 would have no effect. Similarly unplugging all the wires spinning the coil packs 180 degrees and refitting all the wires (HT leads and drivers) in the same relative positions as they were, it'll work fine. which is a good way of diagnosing whether the coil pack or the ECU is causing misfire, if the same cylinders misfire then it's a LT issue, if different cylinders misfire then it's the coil packs.
