I`ve got to replace the FIP on my P38 diesel/manual. I`ve read up on RAVE and checked a few threads on this site, but given I`ve not got the special tools required, and am about an hours drive from my local dealer,(if it does go belly-up), so I`m thinking discretion may be the better part of valour... Anyone tell me how long a job for a garage to extract/replace the fuel injection pump?
Probably worth paying a few hours to be able to sleep without worries!

Ring a dealer and ask them what the standard time is for replacing pump. To be honest with all the tools cannot see it taking a lot more than two or three hours.

Thanks for the answer. With my lack of special tools, RAVE warning about dropping some goodies into the engine and my limited skill-set I`d be looking at couple three days! Think I`ll have an ask around.

i believe you looking at £200-300 from a indi landy garage.you can rent a timing kit off ebay for £28 if your ok with the rest.if not leave it to the pro,s.if you don,t mind me asking whats the reason around you thinking you need your fip changing.

HI. Postage costs etc would put price up a bit if they do hire `em out to us Normands!
Anyway, I`ve a ¬96 manual with about 220k kliks. The faults been lurking there a while but in spite of giving it loads of time it hasn`t fixed itself yet.
The engine "fluffs" on the over-run sometimes, and can cut out. Mostly in cool/cold weather with a fully warmed up engine. The orange eng management light comes up.
Testbook said the pump & #4 injector weren`t talking to each other, so I replaced said injector. No change.
Reading here, and a BMW site it seems there`s a needle inside the FIP that can be gummed/varnished up or impeded by swarf; so I`ve thrown gallons of cleaner thro` the system, doing no apparent good.
I`m aware theres a temp sensor inside the pump, but if it`s gotta come off, I hope it`s only coming off once so I`ve a good (fingers crossed) pump ready to swop in.
I`ll let you know what happens, prob in coupla weeks.. . . Unless it cures itself first!

Then he maybe better going to a full blown dealer they cannot charge more than the standard time as laid down by Land Rover, unless there is a complication. £200-£300 for a couple of hours work, three at the most is bloody rape.
