I have managed to record this sound it's a m4a file I don't have a utube account is that The only way to get it on here cheers for advice

No water loss or water in the oil so hopefully not head gasket when u say lean down do u meen just listen near the head I've done that but sounds lower thinkin exhaust gasket also how hard are they to replace thanks for the suggestions

Depends where it goes and how bad it is. I think @MrGorsky 's made a ticking noise like an exhaust gasket leaking when his went but he caught it very early. There was no other indication on his but he put UV dye in the water and sure enough, a day or so later the dipstick was glowing under a UV light with droplets.

Head gaskets don't have to go into a waterway or oilway. They can just blow straight between pots or direct to the outside world either into valley or below exhaust. They then just chuff, in a very similar way to yours.
Here's one I blew earlier- nowhere near a waterway or oilway, just chuffed

Cheers orangebean I have got a combustion test kit and will check that out in the morning an post results u wouldn't happen to know what plug does which cylinder coz it says I can test each cylinder aswell thanks for the info

I've done a combustion test with the blue liquid and its bluer than blue and no crud on oil filler cap haven't done a dye test but fink I be going down the manifold gaskets route or manifolds I've it's cracked do u fink I should still do the dye test just to be sure

If the gasket has broken between a cylinder and outside.

A dye test won't show up fook.

So my next question is how difficult is it to remove the manifold myself and replace do I need to book a week off work

The exhaust manifolds are relatively easy.

The lower manifold bolt by cylinder 8 can be a pain.

However It's the damn heat shields that are a pain in the arse!!

Replacing the manifold gaskets is a 15-20min job which turns into 2-3 hours because of the damn heat shields!!

I personally haven't heard many stories of them cracking but manifold gaskets do fail !

Doing both sides is a good idea the lower manifold bolt from cylinder 8 can be a pain because getting a ratchet in is quite difficult thanks to the lack of clearance is caused by steering column components. ;)

ERR6733 for the manifold gasket (2 per head)
ESR3260 for the downpipe gasket (1 per side)
Take the extra 10 mins to pop the wing liner off. Makes access to the shield bolts, as well as manifold bolts, easier.
