hi...got one of those money pits we know as freelanders..was sufferin with the 70mph 3000 rpm problem so changed fuel filter and had service and running better...BUT.. now blowing smoke quite bad and pushing oil through dip stick all over engine (TD4)...gone through lots of threads and sites and see it is either the "crank case depression limiting valve"...or the "cyclone breather filter" could be blocked....what i need to know if these parts are the same thing as they seem to be in the same place on the engine according to the threads i have looked at...HHHEEELLLPPPP

Yes the same. They are normally called crankcase filter and if you are getting oil through the dipstick then change asap as you run the risk of the pressure build taking the turbo out.

thanks..will get one monday mornin...i have driven it about 7-10 miles since service...will it have damaged the turbo..seems responsive enough...also will this cure the smoke problem.........

They don't get like that overnight so it must have been driven quite a bit already. Nevertheless i still would be very gentle with it if you have to use it. Once it's changed the smoking should stop and all will be fine.

There are two types available, the earlier design was like a filter which clogs badly & eventually ruins the turbo & in extreme cases the engine unless it's replaced every 12-15,000 miles.
BMW finally realised that there was a problem & have released a later cyclonic unit which shouldn't block as easily & only requires cleaning every 30,000 miles or so.
Apparently Landrover still only sell the older type & people here have had to go to BMW & quote the part number (which another member posted in another thread) to get the modified unit. I've also read that one or two forum member have had to do a bit of filing to get the new unit to fit properly while others have managed to slot it straight in.
