hi all

when I fill my d2 with diesel I can't fill it till full because the fuel spills out .
I tried to fill it slowly but it still froths up and spills out,I can only get it 3/4 full.
Ive tried going round the block and then try to get more in but still the same.
is this a common problem.

many thanks
mark

It sounds to me like it must be full if it is coming out. I think it must be the sender unit. I managed to get mine more accurate by judiciously bending the arm. However that's probably too much trouble to go to. You know where the needle sits when it's full so you can mentally make the adjustment. The real problems start when you have a gauge that says 1/4 full when it's empty!

hi chaps
I know it's only 3/4 full cause I can hear and see the trapped air coming out.
I let the deisel go down and pull the pump trigger again and it froths up.
I thought I might have a blocked breather some wear

Still sounds like a full tank to me. That's just the top of the fuel slopping against the top of the tank and diesel is pretty frothy when freshly served out of the pump. How do you know there's more room in there?

just replace sender unit or and count the litres if the gauge says half and you can only get 20odd litres in means its closer to 3/4 if quarter on the gauge and near 50 litres to fill to gurgle then its closer to half a tank in the vehicle then your sender unit is playing games

Just don't pull the trigger so much maybe?

I had this problem - drove me nuts...

Until I realised mine had a little mesh prefilter that had some debris in it so caused it to froth back up at me when I tried to fill it quickly.

Now that is sorted but I still find that I have to put fuel in short bursts or it froths back up at me. All is as should be - no blockages, pipework all good etc.

In fact my previous 2 work Defenders were exactly the same.

If your certain your tank is not full then all I can think of is blockage/obstruction...or as mentioned in previous post just put it in slowly or in bursts.

I am loving being back to Land rovers...quirks and all!

Yep mine is exactly the same, I can match pulling the trigger so that the speed of fuel going in matches the build up of froth. I fill until the breather 'gurgles' then I know it's totally brimmed.

Yes that's pretty much what happens when I fill mine - you get a noise as the last pockets of air between the fuel and the top of the tank are squeezed out and you can see froth coming up the filler pipe. I always thought this might be to do with the detergent in the fuel. That's why I think Lanber's gauge is under reading and the float in the tank needs its bit of wire bending.
