Hi had my latest landrover Discovery GS for 3 monthes now its a year 2000 W reg has done 94000 miles its a 7 seater Auto.

Firstly its losing water ever so gradually prob put about a litre and a half in over the last 3 monthes there are no signs of a leak but when its on tick over at traffic lights etc the heaters go cold and when i set off you can hear water whoosing around the system. It has never overheated and the temp gague stays constantly about half way up.

Scondly the seats in the back will not go into the upright position i never tried them till this weekend and dont know what i am doing wrong they will come down from the side and click into the floor but thats as far as they will go

Thirdly one of the rear brakes squeels most of the time usually at low speeds can be quite annoying when going through towns etc as people look at you

Fourth The air suspension goes through stages or going down over night will do this a few nights running then stay normal for a few night then start to do it again.

Fifth There seems to be a oil leak from back of engine been told its something to do with a fuel pressure switch but would this cause a oil leak and how easy are they to replace.

Sixth The rev counter goes straight to 2000 revs upson starting the vehicle and stayed there for the duration till ignition switched off again though engine is reving normally.

Thinks thats about it this is mt third disco i have owned a 200tdi a 300tdi and now this did have a short break in between the 200 and a 300 where i ownded a freelander for just over a year and the problems i had with that far outweighed the ones i am having with this disco
Any help and advice would be very welcome and if i dont get chance to thank you all i will take this opertunity now to thank you

1 - sounds like the head gasket i'm afraid

2 - Have you put the rear head rests down before trying to put the seat back up? They have to be locked into position 1st iirc. If thats not it, then the cables in the seat might want replacing / adjustment

3- sounds like a strip down and take a look job.

4 - probably needs new air bags

5 - is either the fuel pressure reg and/or the rocker cover seal at the back of the block.

6 - dunno :)

Please note that i'm a salesman, not a mechanic, so the usual disclaimers apply!

Re the rear seats!

you will probably notice there not locking down on the outer most sides ie the side of the seats nearest the windows.

if you unfold the seats in to the flat position and feel up under the rear of the seat ie: left seat left rear, right seat right rear, have a fumble around under there and you will feel a latch that has to engage round the bar which is part of the folding mechanism, just click that latch sort of down and back towards you so it locks in place. you can now put the back up.

the head rests on the roof lining are not linked to the seat locks!

you cant lift the back of the seat unless both locks are clicked in on each seat.

a good squirt of wd40 up there usually cures the stiff catch!

For the water loss, dont assume its the head gasket, its the last thing you want to do. Ensure all hose clips are tight, if it takes 3 months to lose a litre then its nots going to be obviously gushing out. Check inside the car for the heater matrix, does the car steam/mist up in the morning? check for wet or damp carpets in the front footwells. Check the rad as well, very easy to overlook it and pick something worse! For head gasket check the oil and water for mixing, the oil will be going milky if the waters getting in there, the water system will get pressurised if its leaking into the water jacket.

Rear brakes squealing is either the metal backing(!) or the pads have dried out between the pistons and need cleaning. remove ,clean and put a bit of coppaslip on the back and refit. Not sure if they have squeal shims in there, if they do clean the crap off them as well. Make sure the pads go in without hitting them. If this still happens they may be glazed so with a scotchbrite pad or fine emery cloth clean the pad suface and the disc.

Hope it helps, Im not a LR expert by any means!

Wow thanks for all your replies lots of things there to keep me going and to check. Keep them coming might save me lots of money by not having to take it into a garage thanks again to all of you

I would not assume at all that its the head gasket, as 1.5 litres over 3 months could easily escape as steam through a tiny hole or number of holes. When i bought my 3.9 V8 I had the same rushing noise in the coolant system, which was caused by air in the system. I cured this by topping up the reservoir, the squeezing the top hose - any air that has made its way back to the radiator should be pushed back up to the header tank and escape in to the atmosphere. After alternately topping up and squeezing I ran it 'til hot and the rushing noise stopped. dont want to sound like I'm teaching gran to suck eggs but it worked on mine!
Unfortunately I can help with you r other problems!

I have a 01 Td5 and it was losing a small amount of coolant - it was only when I took the cowling of the engine rad that I discovered a very small leak on the top of the rad , passenger side . It really was very difficult to spot so I would recommend a very careful check . A small leak will evaporate as it comes out and it's the trace of pink that got my attention.
I also have difficulty at times getting the back up on the seats in the boot as it were - make sure for example that the spaces in the boot floor which the seats lock into are perfectly clear and that the lock can engage fully .

I got a 95 3.9 v8i that was losing abought the same amount of coolant, after many exasting hours of HEAD BANGING it turned out to be the gasket on the water pump. you may want to check that as well, it was a white looking buildup behind the pump.

Will see what that costs me before i even ask them to look at anything else they say if it needs a new head itwould be in the region of £1000 fitted plus vat for a reconditioned one does this sound ok

That's a very good quote - things are cheap up north! I was recently charged 1015 plus vat just for the labour - and that's from a man I trust, not a main dealer! If it's not too late, consider replacing the injector loom - they give problems and are much easier to fit if the head's off.
Mine doesn't even have back seats.:(
Good luck with the car - they're a lovely motor to drive!

Just thought i would update
Stil not got car back yet head is on they were just doing the injectors with the computer hope to have it back tomorrow. there also blocking egr valve off so fingers crossed

For the leaking. I would look at your hoses and see if there is a hose clamp that has come slightly loose. I would also thoroughly look over the radiator to see if there is a solder that has broken causing a minor leak.

The low speed squeak from the brakes is the wear indicator. It's basically the "dummy light" or this case sound to say the pads, and probably rotors, need replacing.

Well just been to pick my car up seems to be driving ok though the temp gague seems a little slow to climb. Needs to go back in for a hour on thurs for the egr blanking plate and also the engine covers fitted but at leat am back mobile now
