feels like brakes binding??

hi guys..bought my 1998 1.8 freelander, it had a bearing whining noise that was road speed related.. and it felt like a brake was binding.

i have just replaced the ird with a recon unit and test driven her with the prop and vcu off.

it has no whining but it still feels like a brake is binding?? especially as you come to a stop.

i have jacked up each wheel individually and none are binding??

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Have you jacked up the rear end and spun both rear wheels, then jacked up the fron and spun both rear wheels, to check them?

no.. ive just done each individual wheel in turn..one jacked up at a time... would that make a difference?? sorry new to 4x4's and begining to wish i had bought a honda crv..

All vehicles have a shiny side and dull side, rough with the smooth etc

of course all vehicles have their problems but locally i know of 4 crv's that belong to neighbours and colleagues and around 9 or 10 land rovers (disco's and freelanders)

all honda owners advised me that they never do anything other then service them and change tyres.. one has currently 225,000 miles on same engine, clutch, headhasket etc..

all the landrovers said things like.."thier nice while their working" and " their expensive to maintain" one said.. " mine is like triggers broom..it's been totally rebuilt as ive spent over £2000 in the last 6 months."

i do like this freelander but so far it is one problem after another..i i bought a 4x4 to use as a 4x4 not to run as a 2wd or have stuck on a ramp when it snows...

not trying to run down the landy's but i always seem to buy a troublesome car...just want her cruising the highways!!

If the prop/vcu is connected then you need to lift 2 wheels as you won't be able to over come the pressure from the vcu to turn 1 wheel to get a good feeling for binding. Just re read your original post and I think you still had the prop/vcu off when testing with 1 wheel lifted at a time. This will be ok as it will spin.

I had similar problem ..... had new tyres fitted all round, tyre fitter took rear O/S and used this as spare as max tread on this tyre. He then fitted new tyres to the remaining wheels and put them all back and torqued the nuts up - using a torque wrench - v impressed. Told me it was finished and I could go. Put it into gear to leave, wouldn't move? Tyre fitter jumped in and - it wouldn't move. By this time all tyre fitters aroudn vehicle, one bright one said that it was the rear O/S that wasn't moving. He jacked it up and removed the wheel and teh drum spun freely, fitted it back and the drum was locked solid. He removed the spare from the rear door and inspected this wheel - he noticed that the inside of the alloy was thicker where it fitted against the drum. he took the tyre off the spare and used the spare wheel for thew tyre and refitted this wheel. Hey presto, drum and wheel spun easily. I haven't got to the bottom of this as the alloys all look exactly the same. But was the spare actually from an older, or newer model, or perhaps a different model - 1.8 petrol or BL diesel. All I know was that when fitted it caused a problem.

Glad to hear from anyone else with regards this issue - has anyone else come across a wheel that although looking the same as the rest of the wheels, has a different offset?

There was a change in wheels to fit bigger brake disks on later models. My v6 will have them. Wonder if thats why yer wheel is different. Can't remember the date change at the moment.

interesting..i think ll my wheels are the same original wheels.. but mine all spin freely when they are jacked up..?? i really cant work it out
