I have ever diminishing levels of oil in my overdrive and transfer box. It can get to be a nuisance to actually get out and check the levels manually. so i have mastered the "Drive check method"
step 1. back out of the drive
step 2. inspect the area of the drive where last parked (exiting the vehicle is optional)
step 3. properly interpreting the drive:
A)large pools of black shiny oil means levels are optimal
B)small "spotting" of shiny black oil means a top up needed within 20-30 miles
C)oil spots that are brown, dry and have no sheen means top up now (or tomorrow depending on how late you are for work)
D)Remember gravel drives may require the passenger to get out and take a closer look.
