FAO Those who've painted theirs! (MOD peeps?)

I'm after an idea of how long it will take to paint my 90 inside and out. I put the MOD bit in the title as I know they get colour changes fairly frequently in service so people might have experience.

Sorry, whenever I try to insert the picture it comes up with a broken link. Anyway, as it is it's been brush painted in the horrid colour you see in the pic. The original colour can be seen at the bottom of the drivers door. Not sure what it's called but it's an ex army truck and I'm going to paint it NATO green with the satin finish. I've never painted a car before so what are the stages? Do I try and rub the paint down to a smooth finish before painting or what?

Any hints/tips greatly appreciated.

use one of those mini paint roller things from b+q , and get loads of them cos it drys rock hard in no time . not sure if this picture thing will work cos i'm crap at it also ...

how long is a piece of string?
applying the paint will probably take 2 - 3 hours.
preparatrion could take 2 hours or 2 weeks, depending how much trouble you want to take. the better the preparation, the better the finish will be.

i used to paint landys for a living, and they are one of the easiest vehicles to paint, very straight forward, hardly any masking etc. you want to start by taking off all the bits like the front grill, headlamp surrounds things that can get covered in over spray and will save on masking tape and paper when taken off. and yea you are gonna have to rub the paint down, how much is down to you and what kind of a job your going for. if you have a compressor and an orbital sander thats ideal, but if u just want a quick colour change, you will get away with using scotch pads to quickly key all the panels by hand, ready for the paint to stick too, you deffo have to key it with something tho otherwise paint will just fall off after time. i would use an orbital sander with p150 pads on (p150 being the grade of the pad, lower it gets the more coarse the pad is). once you have rubbed down all the panels its upto you how straight you want your panels to look, i can only see one side of the landy but i can see the dings in the wing and such, and a tub of filler will straighten these up. once your happy with any repairs u have done, u will want to go around landy with a blower, getting rid of the majority of **** and dust off the panels from sanding down. now u want some masking tape and masking paper, any paper will do like news paper. u will want to get that canvas off the back and do your best to seal off the interior which will be your biggest ballache, much easier to do the job with a hard top! now go around taping off all your window rubbers and lights etc as accurately as u can, using a razor blade can be helpfull to get around corners and such. once your happy everything that u dont want to paint is protechted, then you are gonna need a few clean rags and some panel wipe or panel cleaner. use one rag for applying the panel cleaner and one rag for taking it off, this will get all contaminants off the panels ready for paint! now you need to primer paint the vehicle, normally with paints, even primer paints, you will need a thinner to add to the paint to get it to a low viscosity so it will pass through your spray gun evenly. you local paint supplier should be able to advise you on this exactly. the same goes with your finishing paint, once you have choosen a colour you will have to see what type of paint that colour is available in, you have 2 pac paints, polyurethane paints etc. i would argue polyurethane paints are best for land rovers because they are cheap, easy to apply and you dont need hardeners for them to go off. im babbling now...ill let some of that sink in and you can throw some questions back at me if you want, coz this post could go on forever with me rambling!

Forget a spray gun just roller the fooker. A lot less hassle and the finish is good enough for a landy.

lrb2, if that's your Landy it's great, just the look I want when mines finished. I have similar, although cheaper, wheels to go on. In fact they may already be on as I aint seen it for a month!

wtf are you on about?

its not unknown for landies or any other vehicle to be pieced together from bits, have a cloned ID stuck on it and sold on as the real thing. if you are unfortunate enought to buy one and stopped by plod you end up out of pocket, or worst.
maybe you should consider what is being said before yer go off on one

if you say that "maybe you have the paper work" is true then its fairly obvious that the term " maybe you don't" is also true.

and anyway just because you have a bit of paper saying what you have is one thing dosn't mean that it is .
there are countless tales of folk buying things which they believe to be genuine only to find out its nothing but a collection of bits.

just a few weeks ago we had one on here that had bought a '85 defender , according to the paperwork that came with it. it turns out that its was a pre '84 series 3.
do forgive me for trying to save you any trouble if you have bought a collection of bits. maybe you havn't maybe you have.
all i was doing was bringing to your attention the possibility that you might have, of course if you'd rather go through life in ignorant bliss now is the time to say so and we can all stop offering you the benifit of years of dealin with the motor trade and all the posssible cons it has.

Thank you for that, I used to work in the motor trade too and now deal in salvage. All I know is that is was bought direct from an MOD auction as a rolling shell, no engine, light etc. It has the discharge papers so a log book can be applied for and details of it's army reg number.

well there yer go you could have said all that in the first place instead of grabbing the wrong end of the stick
