Am I imagining this, or could I have read somewhere that on a Defender (110) Td5 it's possible to fit a second (extra) fuel filter, for the purpose of giving added protection from nasty poor-quality diesel fuel that one can come across in certain parts of the world?

First thing to do is pour the fuel in through a funnel with a proper fuel-gauze strainer. NEVER pour dodgy fuel straight into the tank of a diesel.

Second, buy a crate of fuel filters from Haddock's, and take them with you.

Nobody with a TD5 should go more than 50 yards from home without at least one spare filter in the car.
