Apparently today i was told it was a common problem (yet another) for the rear door window to explode when shutting the door???

Is this the case, or is there something i should do to prevent this from happening again?

PS Anyone got a spare they want to sell, local to the black country:)

Happened to ours a couple of years ago. 2006 90CSW, wife pulled up at work and BANG the rear window exploded.
She's absolutely certain nothing hit it, she says there was nobody about in the industrial estate at the time.
New window fitted and it's never happened again. I still wonder if it was hit by a flying stone, as there was a road sweeper truck operating nearby. Couldn't tell from the shattered glass as by the time I got there somebody had removed it from the door and stuck a plastic sheet over it.

My rear window exploded when my doris reversed into the garage, spare wheel hit the wall and it creased the whole door, window went bang. Ended up straightening the door with some gentle persuasion from a sledgehammer, nice bloke from autoglass fitted new window and it's been fine since. You couldn't really do that with any other motor :D:D:cool::cool:

usually happens when the rear door gets a bit rusty and has a spare wheel on the back, has happend to me a couple of times, Last time it was when i went over a large pot hole the window smashed. Turned out the door was pretty ffffed anyway, new door complete with window sorted that.
I just take the spare wheel off of the rear door when i go to play in the mud

I Had one go because the door had weakened where it was drilled for the rear wiper, then I had another one go when a road roller pushed me off an un finished road in Mongolia, still driving round with a piece of wood in its place.

Used to suffer with this on our first Defender. The steel door frame was weakened around the area where the wiper spindle went through so the frame could flex when SWMBO would shut the door with a certain amount of fervour.

We had 2 or 3 break before I had the frame strengthened/repaired and fitted a swing-away spare wheel carrier.

For the time it would take I would take off the door trim and have a very thorough check of the steel box section for cracks or flexing.

Can see where the glass breakage started by pattern of shards. happens to be where a weld was put in centre of the channel where window sits. Defo needs some remedial work and preferably a swing away carrier

When you fit a swing-away make sure you adjust it properly otherwise when you shut the door you have the added weight of the carrier as well as the wheel.
