Hi Guys,

I've recently sold my series 3 109 and bought a 2004 Disco HSE TD5 to travel around a bit with the family.

I am hoping to spend the next year getting it in a reasonable state for a 2 week trip to North Africa.

I'm going to post some updates in this thread on the progress and my first question is relating to tyres. I've read all the posts here and all of the other land rover forums and general overland forums but I'm still in two minds and would appreciate any of your opinions.

Two of the tyres currently need replacing and I am having difficulty deciding what they should be replaced with.
These are the current tyres Continental WinterContact TS 830P 225/55 R16 99H XL - eiretyres.com with a goodyear winter tyre.

All tyres are rated for M + S + snowflake.

The wheels are 255/55 r18's.

What I have read tells me that 18in are scarce'er and more expensive in remote locations.
Also with a lower profile there is some question about sidewall strength.

My only option for a well regarded AT tyre are the latest grabber AT.

Second option is sell 18" and buy smaller 16in alloy's and more usual AT's like BFG's etc.

Third option is keep 18"s and get new m+s road tyres (as its my wifes daily) and buy steel rims and get some AT tyres put on for treks and offroad. This is best but $$$

I am wondering how much is realistic to compromise between running M+S on an overland with off road pistes and sand and maybe snow to running grabber at's on 18's to buying a second set of 16's.

I don't have a budget per se but more expense now ill push things out. We are planning 3 week trip in the alps in Aug and I will defo need 2 new tyres by then at least.

My head has been swimming for a few weeks and any advice would be greatly received...

Go 16 I'd say much more readily available even if its just a get you home tyre and larger choice of brands/ styles, offer a swap for your wheels to make it cheaper, and yes go for at's :)
