Hi every,
Had my Dicovery1 3.9 V8 about six months (1st land rover or V8) and one of the very 1st things I did was service it, flush the coolant and as had been suggested on here somewhere replace the radiator bung with a brass one and replace the expansion tank cap.
The new expansion cap tightened to a certain point but then just span in my hand and tightened to the same point again.. I thought it must be a design feature to stop it being over tightened?
Anyway six months on I've had a couple of times where just after I've pull up and switched off coolant gushes past the cap and when it's cooled a little the cap is loose as fook...
It only seems to loose about half a pint of coolant like this.
Today I was passing the local 'land rover supplies' motor factors and picked up another new expansion cap.. (Same place as the last one)
But this one tightens right up..no spin at all..
So I'm hoping it's solved the occasional venting issue too.
On examining the two cap I've noticed that the cap that fails has only got 3 threads on the inside to engage the tank thread.. Where the new one has 4
Apart from that they look identical
Lucky I keep receipts for everything and the motor factors are going to send it back to their supplieras faulty.
So if you have similar issue with AllMakes NTC7161 check those threads
