Ex MOD Series 3 (army)

Hi all, I have just purchased my first ever series land rover and I havent stopped smiling since :)



I have a few questions. they may seem obvious, but treat me nice.
1) Where would i find the plate with the MOD number? I have found the VIN number in the engine bay, but I am told there will be an army issued number, which will enable me to track the vehicles service history.

2) Twin Fuel Tanks. I have a selector switch to select either fuel tank, however I only have one filling hose. how do i fill both tanks?

3) How do i lock the doors?!? i think ive tried every key and handle combination, but nothing seems to work!

4) How can I determine what army model it is?

5) How can I determine whether it is a 12v or 24v model?

6) How do I put the vehicle in 4x4 mode?

7) What is the legality of putting people in the back? are the bare benches classified as seats?

1) i think it should be around the right hand foot well
2) if it has twin tank they should one under each seat. take the seat out and unscrew the big red cap.
3) put key in and turn it..
4) when i wur in the army there was three type of landy swb,lwb and ffr
5)does it have 1 battery in the engine bay or two between the seats?
6)there a description on this forum for this.

i would like to add that if you have only one filling hose i reckon you have a civy model tarted up to loook army spec. the army did have civvy spec landies but only a few of them.
take a seat out and let us know what is under it.

no, nowhere to be seen, are they removed sometimes prior to being sold?

Still no joy, maybe the barrells are shot

LWB, 109" full tilt

1 in the engine bay, i assume this means 12v?

now if its the real thing you'll have another like it under the drivers seat.
and yes it is 12v.. and we didn't have names like tilt or 109"
 
ive seen some with only one filler and theres a hidden pipe connecting the 2 tanks. dunno if this was pukka or someones homemade jobby.
 
sounds home made to me..

best way to check fer mil spec is to have a look underneath. if its covered in thick black underseal that make all the bolts seem a size bigger and the g/box crossmember is bolt in rather than welded then it probelly is.

most of the other things that make then mil are easy to swap
 
I'll agree with just about everything yer man Slob has said. Another way to tell is from the rear crossmember: civvy ones taper at the ends, mil ones are the same width across the whole length. Looking at your photo it certainly looks like a military model.
Your door locks are probably shagged - a common symptom of military life. You should be able to buy a pair of barrels from LandRoverOrphanage or Craddocks for a few quid.

first way to spot an ex mod landy, is by the twin bumpers on both sides at the front end.
 
Question 7: No problem with adults they only have to wear seat belts if they were originally fitted or have been subsequently fitted. Children if under 4'5" must use booster seats, all as per the stupid new law. The EU did'nt allow for side facing seats within the law, so it's tachnically illegal to carry small kids in the back.

shouldn't that be...first way to spot a landy with ex-mod bumpers, is by the twin bumpers on both sides at the front and rear..
most bits that make it mod are easy to swap. bumpers being one of the easiest. even the back cross member could have been swapped if someone really wanted that military look. the cross member isn't so easy to do... its a lot like barries sticking coswurf badges on their repmobile seirra's or a M3 badge on a beamer 316.
 
the wipers have never worked in the few months I have owned it, now the weather has turned, have a sense of urgency to fix it

. i wondered if you could help me with a few questions,

Is there one motor for each wiper blade?

Where is the fuse for the wipers? i found a fuse box on the steering column, is it located in there? I have seen however, people comment that the fuse is shared with the indicator? is this true?

Quite a productive weekend!

The wiper motor problem was the earth lead! it just needed to be reattached to the chassis, and the second fuel tank is all up and running now too.

two more problems to go. one of the brake lights is not working, even though the light is working from the same bulb.

I have a massive crack on the windscreen, is there anywhere to buy windscreen glass? all the places ive looked want to fit it as well, for around £100!
 
yer bulb has two filements in it , one fer brake and one fer tail light. it is possible that one can work and the other wont. have you checked by swapping bulb with the other side.
paddocks,craddocks or any of the other docks should have the glass
 
i've tried a new bulb and its still not working i'm afraid, my multimeter shows there is no current flowing to the bulb when the brakes are pressed.
 
if the other one works the fault should be at the rear of the tub. now you could cheat and run a wire from the side that works to the side that don't but it should be easy to find the break in the wire.
