Cheers for the replys guys

I know feck all aboot ex-military stuff so had to get some kinda info on it. the guy seems genuin and done a fair bit of checking himself to amke sure its was the real deal. Saying that have seen those right nice wolf copys kicking boot so ill be on my guard and make some calls etc. Its more gona be a wkend toy for hiding in forests with my dogs , just thought when i saw it what a nice landy and i do like the series landys.
Parking no probs it would live alongside my defender by the dogs :) behind the transit van.

Some good advice there though so appricaite that oh and sorry for the bad spelling not like nme :p .

So check clutch, check chassis, check engine for recon plate, has a brand new hood sot hats cool. Tyres look worn, check with military type places for history but guy has that already but check again.

Anything else?
 
at the end o the day if you like it and its in your price range dont really matter
but if you want an ex service motor for a show peice then be very careful as this does look personally i think this might be a lookielikey but looks nice all the same
also the varied from unit to unit as the were usally supplied to regiment as stock and fitted out to suit deployment and regularly refited/retrofitted

on any ex mod landy id expect to see signs of misuse and repair work most tend to have panels replaced on a regular basis
remember the milage wont be road miles

best advice go look go home sleep on it then make desision
 
Quite right, at the end of the day it's your money, and will be your vehicle. If it's what yu want, ret it. just make sure you know what you're getting and that you are not paying over the odds for something that it isn't.

Over the years I have learnt two things:
Never say "Land Rover newer made that"
Never say "The Army never used that"

Having said that I wouldn't expect the Paras to use 109s in anything other than admin roles.

the light weight or air portable landy wur built fer the paras and you don't see many lightweight 109's. so they either do a lot of admin or yer talking bollocks
 
I've never understood the obsession with Military Vehicles fine if you buy one and it's still got all it's bit's. But these peeps who try to match every little detail and item. They scare me.
 
reet strange as most of them are just landies with two tanks and a light underneath em. course yer got yer speciallised vehicles but being specialised men thur int many of em. and they don't perform any better than un speciallised ones, and in some cases a lot worst because of the extra weight.

Right went to see the landy. From what i could tell it was totally genuine but not just for the para regiment- it had been in other regiments and handed around. There was leters from landrover confirming its build and army start date, also had release papers etc aswell as pics of it in service. And alot of other history.

Had the duel tanks under front seats and white diff case, had alot of the original equipmnent and a brand new hood. Chassis looked solid and found no bad spots even int he nooks and crannys. bulkhead was solid and generally all the panels were in good nic, it was hand panted though aswell as the interior.Engine did run very sweet but no recon panel badge.

Ok what put me off was in test drive but tell me whats you think/
There was a problem with a chipped first gear tooth so it grinded slightly and changing gear was bloody difficult even double cluthing it found it hard to slot it in gear.Steering was very heavy almost stiff feeeling.

Otherwise i liked it be great for the dogs and in summertime not really for show just a fun toy but me thinking its a bit oer the odds and that steering and gearchange has really put me off.

I said to the guy i got a few checks to amke and ill let him know after the weekend. Should i just walk away?

Its your call dude. Your money at the end of the day. My opinion is that any vehical of that age is gunna require something to be repared/replaced. Not too sure how expensive a gearbox replace is gunna be tho. Maybe someone else can advise....

Not sure about buying it till i done a bit more pricing up o hinngs. Guy said he will pull it off the market till i sell my Suabru as he would prefer someone like me thats gona use it regualry and offroad. Just this gearbox and steering problems. Also its tax is out in Marcha nd its MOT in May.
With my amature knoledge i deffaintly think the gearbox was goosed it was damn near impossible at times to get gear unless you stopped. The steering was to heavy and stiff feeling for it just to be the norm for a series as i mind a standard series3 i tried years ago was quiet light on its manuel steering. I was all up for taking it there and then but think i need to ahve another look. I also mayeb think its just a wee bit overpriced?.

Dont get me wrong im not a military fan in anyway just i liked it thought it had character and would be a fun thing in the summer with the roof off roaming about the hills.
 
Heavy steering could be down to all sorts of things, many of them, but not all, minor and easily fixed (Lack of oil in the steering relay is far from unusual), evens tires or tyre pressures. The gearbox could be a bigger problem. Fixing most things on a Land Rover is simple, once you've diagnosed the problem, but many of the parts are b. heavy.
Having said that most of the problems, apart from the chipped tooth, and that though annoying could last for years, sound typical Series to a degree. You really need to find someone used to series Land Rovers to give it a drive.

I agree with DaveC when he mentions the tyres. Mine had original MOD tyres when i bought it and the streering was very heavy. Much nicer once i had replaced them with BFG's. Also much better once i had filled up the steering fluid!! Took a while for me to cotton on to that one!:rolleyes:

Some good advice there guys am glad i asked yer opinion on the matter, Its not really the shovels n axes hanging off the side that floats my boat i ahve this strange intrest in old things lol. Often buy random old **** that catches my eye think last item was a 1950 american opticians peice :D not that i need it just i liked the machineing that went into it...see that kinda weird old stuff.

The gearbox broken tooth indeed ahs lasted for years as it seemingly came out of service like that so not an issue just darn hard getting those gears, even double clutching so thast what got me thinkng. Tis true on military tyres so may be that causing the steering but test driving it seemed like binding to me.

Think what you advice is best and someone that knows series well tests it first i mean evryhting else seem fine and did not scare me im kinda used to the odd wobble here n there with my defender but it has feather light power steering and a very tight gearbox thats joy to use so i cant compare them their diffrent beasts all together.

Just gota find someone that knows series all my m8's have defenders.

I here you Defenderdavie i do actually wana build a 90 as i once got nearly stuck as my 110 to long for a offroad corner we attempted. Im just ootside edinburgh loads boys oot this way seem big on landys especailly defenders.

End of day think ill tell him to advertise it again and ill post it up in sale here for him aswell as a thank you gesture. I could buy it but ill keep the cash and if my car sells in time so be it i might buy it otherwise too much maybe's with potential problems that i just dont know enough about. Not to keen on the short MOT anyway though it had much more.

:eek: Sorry i meant ill post an advert on behalf of the guy selling the series as a thankyou gesture. Dont think i should risk the sale of it whilst i decide. If my car goes in time see what happens depending on if i can get someone with series knoledge to test drive it for me otherwise ill let it go just cause im not sure through lack of knoledge on the series.

Do know of a few 110 for sale how much ya wanting to pay??

Know of several good discoverys aswell.
