Hi names Steve and I know its not an ideal first post but here goes
I recently bought a 2004 freelander TD4 ( Don't laugh it was cheap)
Basically it suffered from turbo run away you know where it drinks its own engine oil! The owner said it revved up to 8500 pretty impressive for a derv lol
Its been sat for a few years and the owner told me the engine and turbo were dead on dipping the dip stick there wasn't a drop of oil left.
Brought it home stuck some oil and a charged battery just to see what would happen and was amazed to find it started instantly and sounds really nice, only ran it for a few seconds due to the amount od smoke it was pumping out.
So my question is if I change the turbo is the bottom end likely to go bang anytime soon?
The owner said he drive it home after but it wasn't very happy.

If the bottom end survived the initial runaway and the pistons didn't start welding themselves to the bores I would replace the turbo (which will probably be the source of the oil) and take it from there. Carefully. The turbo might not be the cause of the runaway - although most of the other things I can think of would also come with obvious rattles and clonks.

Check the crank breather circuit and replace the filter while you are doing the turbo. A blocked breather might possibly push oil up in to the combustion chamber.

They way Im thinking is do I spend the money replacing the turbo or the whole engine and turbo. My thought is if the bottom end may have been weakened buy the lack of oil.

Its a freelander, you dont need to ask if it will go bang! ;)

If you buy a used turbo and then find the engine is kaput what have you lost? If you need to replace the engine worst case is you have a spare turbo. Best case you sell the turbo for what you paid for it.
