I've lost count of the times I've had someone materialise out of nowhere and whisper these sacred words into my delicate shell-like. I'd like to think it's because I have a friendly face and an outgoing, approachable personality. But before I congratulate myself too highly on my geniality, I thought I'd best check here to make sure no one else has ever experienced this phenomenon. Please tell me it's never happened to you. Make an old bald bloke very happy.
 
I normally get..
Can you tow my caravan it’s only got to go round the corner…nope I need £50 just to attach it to the landy & 1 of you has to get in the passenger seat.(these jobs are never simple)

Can you move some cows/sheep/ bales of hay…
Payment is normally some of the above

Will always stop to tow a landy or recover 1 for free.
 
I live on a single track road which a couple centuries ago was down the middle of the common, the circle round the outside of the common is still mostly unmade. The southern half is a bridleway of which an eighth is classed as road.

A couple of years ago one pillock white van man drove down there .. sat nav set to pedestrian...
I should mention outside the common all round is former marshland..
It being winter, his front wheels sank and the van bellied out..
I towed him backwards half a mile out of the bridleway to the road section, he was xxxxing useless at reversing as well, couldn't follow the wheel ruts, which is why the idiot had pressed on....

There's a farmers concrete pan for sugar beet next door, a tearful young lady turned up at our door, she'd parked her horse truck there and gone for a ride, .. she got back reloaded the horse then the lorry wouldn't start.. the horse was getting upset at just standing there.. i ended up tow starting her diesel truck.

Had a stranger knock on the door saying Yanny (local friend) had sent him to us cos he wasn’t in the village to use the tractor.
The mighty 90 dragged this out no problems. Yep there’s ice on that “little puddle”

So I would have to conclude it’s not your friendly geniality as I can be a right grumpy git. It’s the Mighty LR :) that they come too.

Nothing wrong with being friendly & helpful if it suits you to be, but I don't suffer fools gladly & anyone who comes across with an 'entitled' attitude gets an instant cold shoulder. On the rare occasion I have helped anyone I've made it clear that I'm not a recovery organisation with the appropriate PL insurance & left the choice of attachment point to them .. that way the responsibility is theirs & I don't get my knees dirty.

Sorry mate, it's your geniality that attracts them ;)
 
It's the opposite for me, stopped to offer help to a young man with a young lady in a little sports car and he declined and looked very flustered. Also stopped to help out a couple of dibble during the storms, offered to tow a tree off the road but they said they'd cut it up cos someone else in a 4x4 had already tried and cocked it up! I dont think a lot of men like to accept help from a woman.

If a bloke's with a bird, he's unlikely to want to accept help from another bloke either! A lot of young men won't even stop and ask for directions if they have a young woman with them.

I literally had this about 3 weeks ago.
A guy walked up my driveway asking if I had jump leads he could borrow - he later said he’d seen me working on my landie several times.
Turns out, he’d had some work done by a local tradesman whose van wouldn’t start. Took a jump pack over instead. Appreciative guy in the van, so all ok 👍
