New to the D4 having upgraded from a D2, and doing research into the common faults. Has there been a link proven between failing to keep the Brake shoes adjusted and the EPB Module stripping its gears?? Or is there any other maintenance that can be done to keep it working for longer???

Check/adjust annually, there is a techy procedure involving torque wrenches etc, I just adjust them up until wheel starts to lock, then back off 8 clicks.
I fitted new genuine handbrake shoes 7 years ago, and recently replaced rear discs and pads, the shoes were good enough to go again.
As you have just bought the car I would suggest taking them down, having a look see, grease where the shoes touch the back plate, and chuck them back on, recheck in another year or two.

I think as they cannot be seen they are ignored until they either make a noise or the actuator buggers up as they have been ignoring the screech for ages.

Yes out of sight out of mind, I noticed a you tube video on the BMW X5 handbrake and it looked like an identical unit outside and inside with the same motor, wonder if they have the same failure rate???

I bet the blokes who write BMWs service routines don't 'forget' stuff to make the cars look cheaper to run like LR does. If it ain't likey to fail inside warranty then LR don't worry about it.

The handbrake module is reliable if its kept adjusted and the handbrake is used regularly.

I have removed the rear disc, cleaned it out and lubricated the mechanism and adjusted the shoes, must remember to do it next time not just check the disc pads!!!
Having said that does anyone have any other maintenance jobs that keep trouble away but are not in the "book"?

Check the sills for rust espcially at the rear and the lower edges, all the D3 are starting to go, so D4 will be doing the same especially if early D4.
Loads in the book thats not done, brake fluid/brake flexis/grease rear brake lines as they rot out over axle/diff oil quantty is tiny (frt diff 0.65 ltr) and is run for way to long (over 100k), gearbox oil left in way to long, engine oil quantity is also to small (5.5ltr) and again left in for to long.

I'm on the case with the sills with rust prevention, and have changed the power steering fluid, Brake fluid done by previous owner. Will do the Diff and transfer box oils.
